The Ionosphere of Saturn Predictions for Pioneer 11

چکیده
Model calculations indicate that the lower ionosphere of Saturn is controlled by photochemical processes, with basic features similar to the Jovian ionosphere. The scale height of the upper ionosphere is large (•3350 km). A peak electron density of •10•cm -s 2250 km above a 10•9cm -a reference level is expected assuming an eddy coefficient at the homopause of 1.3 x 10øcmas -• and a relatively hot exosphere at 1300K. Recently, Brownstein and Moffat proposed a gravitational mechanism to explain the Pioneer anomaly based on their scalar-tensorvector (STVG) metric theory of gravity. In this paper we show that their model, fitted to the presently available data for the anomalous Pioneer 10/11 acceleration, is in contrast with the latest determinations of the extra-precessions of perihelia for Jupiter, Saturn an...

This chapter summarizes our current understanding of the ionosphere of Saturn. We give an overview of Saturn ionospheric science from the Voyager era to the present, with a focus on the wealth of new data and discoveries enabled by Cassini, including a massive increase in the number of electron density altitude profiles. We discuss recent ground-based detections of the effect of “ring rain” on ...
